Philodendron

The Philodendron genus is a large collection of diverse aroids. Their habits of growth can be anywhere from growing from the forest floor up, on trees or downwards by starting high up and eventually reaching the forest floor with their roots. Usually leaves change from heart shaped juvenile leaf into many striking adult forms. Many different forms of variegation can be found ranging from white to yellow to red.

Popular old school Philodendron species are the vine like Philodendron scandens and Philodendron erubescens best known perhaps for its Imperial Green cultivar. Both known for their deep green leaves that make them well suited for darker indoor locations. The species with larger and more variegated leaves will require more light while still avoiding direct sunlight.

As the genus contains such a diversity of different shapes and growth forms there might be some variation in the care requirements between different Philodendrons. While they generally all thrive in indirect sun and like to dry up a bit before waterings exactly how much or little can differ. It is always recommended to cross reference care instructions with a new species.
